CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MAE

“Lucky me,” Mae said after she’d ended the call to the maximum security correctional facility where Tucker would live out the rest of his days. “I just have to create an account, and I can get into the appointment system. I’ll be able to schedule a video visit with Tucker as early as tomorrow if there’s a slot available.”

Mae already knew she was allowed to ‘visit’ with Tucker. She was on his list of approved visitors because they didn’t know what administrative tasks might need dealing with in the future after having been married to him for so many years. She never in her wildest imaginings, however, thought she’d be initiating a visit for personal reasons.

She sighed and watched out the kitchen window as the brightening day doubled its intensity, reflecting off the new snow that had fallen in the night. She felt Jude’s eyes on her. He sat at the table finishing a cup of coffee.

“You don’t have to ever see him again if you don’t want to,” he told her. “Even a video visit is a big deal.”

“I need to do this. It’s not about me. If there is a connection between something Tucker knows and those missing girls… Jude, I can’t ignore any trails, whatever dark or crazy places they may lead to. So,” she said, picking up her phone again. “Here goes.”

Every time she looked up from the screen as she went through the various log-in processes, she noticed Jude’s eyes on her. It was like when they’d been in the courtroom. She didn’t find his gaze on her judgmental. Only comforting. He couldn’t be on screen with her when she ‘met’ with Tucker, but she wanted him in the room when she faced him.

“There. I’ve requested an appointment for tomorrow morning. Today I’m going to try to reproduce the eyes Livvie drew. I guess I had a little too much wine last night for a steady hand. I can’t remember the last time I woke up with such a bad headache.”

Jude smirked. “I’ll bet you have a headache. I had to carry you upstairs.”

“You didn’t take advantage of my state, though,” Mae pouted.

“Because I’m an honorable cowboy, Miss Northrop. Besides… I’m not clear on what you want. Yesterday morning we were talking about birth control. Now…” Jude let the words hang there, a sad smile on his face.

“I’m sorry. These victims are weighing heavily on my mind. And the idea of whether or not I deserve a good man when so many women were hurt because of how blind I was… it’s not easy, Jude. But I want you. You know I want you. It’s a whole week of date nights, right? We’ll try again tonight. Less wine, though.”

“Sounds fair,” Jude said, brightening visibly. He rose and approached her where she rested her lower back against the counter. He tucked her loose hair behind her ears and leaned down to put his mouth at her ear. “Tonight’s when I get you moaning again, Mae. Just like when I kissed you that first time.
